The US SSA is reportedly deploying voice over IP communications on a very large scale.

Although most articles pertaining to this seem somewhat overly jargonistic,  it appears they are going to use a VoIP network to join some 1600 regional offices together as one large contact (call?) centre. This would presumably enable all 55,000 of the SSA’s geographically dispersed field staff to participate in what would appear to the outside world to be one unified call centre.

The Social Security Administration’s telephony replacement project is scheduled to take ten years and cost $300 million.
