Introduction :: What is Voice Over IP?

VoIP or Voice over IP is the use of computer networks to carry voice (and possibly video) telephone calls without necessarily connecting the the normal telephone network. Voice over IP services are already a major product with many existing suppliers competing for your business.

Voice over IP networks usually consist of digital telephones connected across the internet, able to call each over for ‘free’ and also able to make connections to normal land-line phones. Voice over IP systems can also be deployed within company networks without any external internet connection as an intra-company telephone system.

Voice over IP systems offer many benefits such as cheap or free international calling, business conference calling and video calling. These systems are seen by the majority in the telecoms industry as the ‘way ahead’ and large-scale corporate roll-outs have already taken place.
