UK Communications regulator Ofcom has proposed that UK Voice over IP networks should all have a 999 (UK emergency number) facility. Ofcom’s recent research suggests that while some UK VoIP providers offer the facility, some home VoIP users of other suppliers may not be aware that they cannot make a 999 call.

Ofcom is said to be working closely with their European counterparts to develop comprehensive VoIP access to emergency services across Europe.
